Concerning the error message you get while trying to start bmpanel2 from GNOME,
I guess you got a lot of open systray apps:

if (total_constants_width + total_separators_width > 
    panel->width - min_fill_size)
    {
     XDIE("Too many widgets here, try to remove one or more");
    }
