Well, before I proceed to review this:

For me gwaei easily segfaults with
- once $ rm -rf ~/.waei
- execute $ gwaei
- choose "Install Dictionaries", click "Add" on "English:"

gdb log attached. Note that 
#2  0x0806d21a in install_thread (dictionary=0x0)
    at settings-callbacks-gtk.c:227
is apparently bad.
