Ok, some progress here. It seems I can't discover nor access the laptop when
it's connected using wifi (wlan0 interface); again, not sure if this is a bug.

As soon as I attach it to a cable on the same network, I can definitely
discover the service with avahi. However, I don't know which user/password pair
to use on the iphone side upon connection; my own user's data does not work
there.
