I am taking over the review as I am a sponsor.

Marshall, as you're upstream developer, I'd recommend changing the versioning
scheme so the release is not part of the upstream tarball version. You can use
version.minor.patchlevel versioning instead and use the release only for the
RPM spec file changes versioning.

This command in %clean should be removed:
rm -rf $RPM_BUILD_DIR/%{name}-%{version}
