Now I regret squashing git commits :-)

I guess I could consider it some kind of exercise that proves my packaging
skills.

I've found another email address of the author and I've sent him a message
regarding the maintenance of the project. I should, hopefully, get an answer in
a couple of days. If not, I could ask the projects using it to join forces (as
you've already suggested).
