X won't work after an F3 install

I have installed Fedora 3 on a G3 iBook (late 2002), but none of the
graphical interfaces will work properly.
When I log into GNOME as root, I get the following messages: "There was
an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon. Some things, such as
themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly. The
Settings Daemon restarted too many times. GNOME will still try to
restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in." Also: "Nautilus
can't be used now, due to an unexpected error from Bonobo when
attempting to locate the factory." And "There was a problem registering
the panel with the bonobo-activation server. The error code is 3. The
panel will now exit."

When I log in as non-privileged user ("rs") the session is terminated
immediately with the messages:

"/etc/X11/gdm/PreSession/Default: Registering your session with wtmp and
utmp
/etc/X11/gdm/PreSession/Default: running: /usr/bin/X11/sessreg -a -w
/var/log/wtmp -u /var/run/utmp -x "/var/gdm/:0.Xservers" -h "" -1 ":0"
"rs" Agent pid 6646

(gnome-session:6621): libgnomevfs-WARNING * *: Unable to create ~/.gnome
directory: Permission denied. Could not create per-user gnome
configuration directory '/home/rs/.gnome2/': Permission denied

Earlier attempts to install worked graphically for a short while then
degraded rapidly. I tried running an X autoconfiguration called
Xautoconfig-0.22-1a.ppc.rpm which makes little visible difference to the
behaviour.

The machine boots OK and appears to work non-graphically.

Would appreciate any suggestions.

Richard
