It seems to be working now.  I have other problems now, though ...

This seems to have been the key.  I can now see networks and such.

I see almost everything you say but it never associates with my access
point.  I've verified multiple times that the WEP key is correct but I
always end up with (in /var/log/messages):

SoftMAC: cannot associate without being authenticated, requested
authentication

and

SoftMAC:  Authentication timed out with <access point MAC>

I guess I'll file a bug ... okay:
