Hi David,
sorry for the blackout period. I've upgraded to the latest and greatest
this morning ( 2.6.17-1.2145_FC5 ) and noticed that the problem is still
there.
However, the symptoms have changed a bit : When i close the lid, the
machine goes to sleep ( bliking led etc ...), but when i open the lid, i
hear the hard drive coming back to life and nothing more, the screen
stays black and my only solution is to do a hard reboot.
I've tried unloading as many modules as possible and i came down to this
shortlist, with no success :

Module Size Used by
sungem 36452 0
sungem_phy 10528 1 sungem
radeon 127240 1
drm 84280 2 radeon
snd_powermac 52524 5
snd_pcm 102980 3 snd_powermac
snd_timer 30212 3 snd_pcm
snd 73076 9 snd_powermac,snd_pcm,snd_timer
soundcore 11652 1 snd
snd_page_alloc 11944 1 snd_pcm
therm_adt746x 13804 0
ipv6 296488 14
autofs4 27108 0
sunrpc 194280 1
ip_conntrack_netbios_ns 3072 0
ipt_REJECT 6112 1
xt_state 2240 2
ip_conntrack 64008 2 ip_conntrack_netbios_ns,xt_state
nfnetlink 8312 1 ip_conntrack
xt_tcpudp 3328 4

ext3 156808 6
jbd 77236 1 ext3

looking at the logs here's what i get:
Jul 6 11:04:33 kaluha pmud[2093]: lid closed: request sleep
Jul 6 11:04:33 kaluha pmud[2093]: running /etc/power/pwrctl sleep battery
Jul 6 11:04:33 kaluha pwrctl: calling /etc/power/pwrctl-local sleep battery
Jul 6 11:04:33 kaluha pwrctl-local: sleep battery
Jul 6 11:04:33 kaluha pmud[2093]: going to sleep
Jul 6 11:08:16 kaluha syslogd 1.4.1: restart.

The last message is from the reboot, there's no sign of things happening
when i open the lid, aside from the noise made by the hard drive coming
back to life.
Is there anything else i can do to help pinpoint the problem ?
Thanks for your help.
PS: 2.6.16-1.2133_FC5 still works like a charm .....
