Sorry, I should have been clearer in my answer...

APM bios screens just can't come up with ACPI because ACPI is
specified that the OS takes care of it all.

In addition, 2.4 ACPI just doesn't do suspend to disk, regardless
of whether acpid is informed of button presses...
