Sound not working on 2.6 kernel

I had the same problem using vanilla-2.6.x ,alsa and emu10k1 
soundmodule. Turns out
the modules where not being loaded so I just did that manually (and 
edited modprobe.conf),
snd_emu10k1(my card), snd_pcm_oss,
snd_seq_oss (for oss emulation). That worked for me, hope it works for 
you too.
