I read an interesting thing somewhere recently -- you can apparently 
separately configure ssh's bulk encryption from the authentication 
encryption.  There's even the option to go for no encryption for the 
transport (although I guess you should give up on su in that case).  The 
benefit is that you still have strongly encrypted session authentication, but 
you can trade off encryption strength against performance for the bulk data.
