That's because there are two different blocking issues here. You not only
need to add mp3 playback capability to gstreamer, you also need to
recompile rhythmbox with libid3tag. You can get libid3tag and
libid3tag-devel from http://shrike.freshrpms.net/ and recompile rhythmbox
with them installed.

An other option (the one I'm using since I'm having gstreamer/ALSA issues
on my laptop) would be to use a rhythmbox compiled against libid3tag and
using the xine backend. I have such a package here :
