Try running "glxinfo" to see if Direct Rendering is working, or if it's
using software rendering ("Mesa GLX Indirect").  You can also check your
frame rate with "glxgears" -- though that doesn't help too much if you
have don't have a previous reading to compare to.

Also, note that there's no longer an option to configure DRI in the GUI
redhat-config-xfree86 -- perhaps you need to re-enable the appropriate
options in your XF86Config .
