The first thing i tend to recommend on this sort of crashing problem is
to check to see if the memory has developed problems.  It may not be the
problem, but it is better to find up front than to spend weeks trying to
fix the unfixable.

http://www.memtest86.com/ is the best on I know of.  It is free and fits
on a floppy and/or bootable cd-rom.
