hardware question: Sony DVD with linux

What tools do you use and how did you set th drive up?  I have a sony 
DRU-500A and I can only write DVD-R with cdrecord-proDVD.  No luck with 
using cdrecord (or even cdrecord-proDVD) to write CD-R.
