$ cat /etc/sysconfig/keyboard
KEYBOARDTYPE="pc"
KEYTABLE="de-latin1-nodeadkeys"

when numlock
  is enabled in vmware
  and disabled in redhat
the numlock-status will change while you move the mouse over vmware.

there might be a possibility to enable a user-defined setting.

evtl.
$ man xmodmap
$xev
<snip>
KeyPress event, serial 25, synthetic NO, window 0x2400001,
    root 0x6e, subw 0x0, time 7151625, (363,438), root:(368,460),
    state 0x10, keycode 77 (keysym 0xff7f, Num_Lock), same_screen YES,
    XLookupString gives 0 characters:  ""
</snip>
