Yeah, that's accumulated like you said. Note that the amount is 
monotonically increasing.

Very good point! The kernel appears to need 69MB (71 - 2) and only 66MB 
are available on that drive.

Thanks for the help, mystery solved.

In the meantime I attempted to update some packages (but not everything) 
and now my yum is broken:
