Here's what I have in my rc.local:
modprobe -q nvidia ||
	(cd /root/NVIDIA*/usr/src/nv && make clean && make install)

With the NVidia package uncompressed in /root:
cd /root && sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6106-pkg1.run -x
