This is a known bug. The Radeon 9800 (Pro) isn't really supported yet.
I had to edit my XF86config manually, and enter "ChipID 0x4e46" in the
 devices section for the graphics-card. This tells X to assume a Radeon 9700,
 which actually is supported. No problems since then.
