If you look at you /etc/X11/XF86Config file, you will probably see that it
is using the radeon graphic driver. Unfortunately the driver doesn't work
with the 9800 cards; change it from "radeon" to "vesa" and X will work. vesa
is the generic video card driver; the big down-side is that you won't have
3D-acceleration. So far I don't know of any drivers that install properly on
FC2T1 to give you 3D-acceleration, so for now you'll have to do without (but
this only affects video games).
While you're looking at that  XF86Config file, make sure that all device
references in the mouse sections point to /dev/input/mice, not /dev/psaux
(this will also cause the X server to crash).
