I was experiencing this error today. Both programs mentioned were 
problematic. I would have not guessed the culpret. Thanks!

I take it that I run /etc/cron.daily/prelink or wait.

Also, there were no desktop icons displayed in gnome with this problem. 
The gnome-panel seemed to be normal.
