Pam has gone walkies - HELP!

Hi,

My system seems to have gone potty. I've fixed the initscript problen, but now
seem to have lost libpam.so.0 which means that I can't log in!

Is there anyway to abort during a boot up so that I am dropped to that insert
root password login you see when fsck gets annoyed?
