Are you high? 

Who says i'm running as root all the time? If you taken the time to check, Firefox "Check for updates" is only available to root user. I'd have updated firefox (if it worked) and logged in as unprivileged user to USE it. 

Have you every tried to updated any RPM's as unprivileged user? Are you using Linux at all? :-P
