I've already got rid of 1805 by refreshing my mirror and overwriting my
boot.iso CDRW, anyway problem still happens in 1806

Yes :-(

On a machine that is working fine with 1806smp, I installed 1806up,
rebooted into it and it failed the same way with "ata1 is slow to
respond" etc

I've just extracted the contents of my 1806 smp/up initrd files
they each have the set of files (i.e. count and name wise)
executables in /bin are identical, obviously the modules in /lib are
different, the contents of the init are identical

Unusual to see an issue where _not_ running smp tickles a problem
