Panic mounting FAT (USB-Stick)

Has it ever worked in Linux?

I ask this as I have tried to mount some usb sticks that were formated 
and only worked in Linux.  In one case I found out that the 
manufacturer actually had details on how to convert the stick to work 
in Linux.
