Yes I understand :)

The point is that Fedora 5 core's version of evolution did work but
the upgrade (not to rawhide) made it not work.

May be it is my fault and I should have used a more stable (long term)
distro like Ubuntu but I have been a redhat/fedora user for the past
seven years and old habits die hard.
