gcc segfaults when compiling kernel

This sounds like a hardware problem. The last time I saw symptoms like
this my CPU fan had failed.
You should probably take a look to make sure your hardware is running at
reasonable tempatures, and if that doesn't turn up anything you should
probably check your memory.
