gnome-mount -d /dev/fd0 does nothing to mount floppies

With 2.6.18-1.2679.fc6 I see
# dmesg | grep floppy
ide-floppy driver 0.99.newide
PM: Adding info for platform:floppy.0
and
# dmesg | grep fd0
Floppy drive(s): fd0 is 1.44M
and still no floppy is recognized by a desktop even if 'lshal'
seems to know about it; but not about a block device /dev/fd0
so maybe this is really a hal problem?
