Thanks for that Michal. And to all the other posters that 
responded with helpfull suggestions.

I found three versions of libmawt.so at:

/usr/java/jdk1.6.0/jre/lib/i386/headless/libmawt.so
/usr/java/jdk1.6.0/jre/lib/i386/motif21/libmawt.so
/usr/java/jdk1.6.0/jre/lib/i386/xawt/libmawt.so

in each directory I did the following:

backup libmawt.so

then run:

# sed -i s/XINERAMA/FAKEEXTN/g ./libmawt.so

That sorted the problem nicely.
