cannot get into system with kernel 2.6.24-0.138.rc7.fc9 on laptop

When booted with an older kernel can you confirm if the above is 
actually true or false [ls -la ....]?

normal if you didn't previously suspend the machine.

perhaps the initrd.img is corrupt - see some earlier threads regarding 
mkinitrd.
