okay, I just ran this test on what you just said. Here's what I have:

yum groupinstall XFCE  results in 28 packages added to a transaction on
my system
yum groupinstall xfce-desktop results in 28 packages added to a
transaction.

So, what are you talking about yum not treating them the same?
