It's a long time since I took this laptop anywhere :-) However, I took it to
akademy 2007 and used it with the university network. It simply uses the info
in the configuration if the SSID matches, but asks for a key if it doesn't.
My memory isn't worth 2p these days :-) but I'm pretty sure that's what
happened. I've mostly used the EeePC on open networks, but I have used it at
least once on an encrypted one, and the same thing happened there.
