saving the desktop?

That won't work for me because I don't always want the full desktop, so
I start a basic setup then fire up slow-to-start things like Evolution
or Firefox as needed. (For example I need to run "pkill gnome-key"
before starting Evolution. I know I could write a small script etc. etc.
but that's not really the point).

I use "restore manually saved session" because I went through the
rigmarole I described earlier in order to save it. That's what I'd like
to change.
