Rawhide install hangs after loading initrd.img

Rawhide 64 on AMD 3000+ Asus a8n-e   or Core Duo on Intel dc33bu
either pxeboot or boot.iso CD

Installation startup hangs after loading initrd.img  -- the progress
bar rapidly ramps up to 100% and then just sits there until given a
three finger salute.
