I've been seeing this problem with pulseaudio as well. I have found that
if I run 'pulseaudio' from the 'Run Application' menu I get sound back.
It seems that the pulseaudio application is crashing.

Nothing much in the syslog except this..
Oct  7 14:23:55 quad pulseaudio[2904]: shm.c: shm_open() failed: No such
file or directory
Oct  7 14:23:55 quad pulseaudio[2904]: pstream.c: Failed to import
memory block.
