No Graphical shutdown available

All this was working prior to the updates.  I am using Gnome on an Acer Aspire Notebook.  Trying Shutdown now from a terminal su'd to root only seemed to shutdown X.  This was a problem a few weeks ago but was fixed but looks like it has regressed !
