TeXlive installation failure, TeXlive update breaks the TeX installation

The previous update (the last TeXLive 2009 one) produced a similar
result for me (apparently a not unexpected result), but the complete
remove/reinstall fixed it. The TeXLive 2010 update from there worked
with no problem.
Are you sure you got all the pieces when you did the remove/reinstall?
