I do not get prompted to validate the media. I dump directly to the
'Choose a language' screen in text mode.

tty3 only says:
11:36:36,699 ERROR : got to setupCdrom without a CD device

tty4 among other things says:
NOTICE kernel:scsi 0:0:0:0: CD-ROM HP Virtual DVD-ROM
PQ: 0 ANSI: 0 CCS
...
WARN kernel:sr0 scsi3-mmc drive: 0x/0x caddy
INFO kernel:Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.20
DEBUG kernel:sr 0:0:0:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0
NOTICE kernel:sr 0:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg0 type 5

could it be a timing problem?

there is also a message saying
INFO kernel:fb0: radeondrmfb frame buffer device

The crash happens in /sbin/loader.
I have created a bug and will soon upload a screenshot.
