Thank you for your reponse Seth.  The is the last about 1% of output 
from yum.  Hope this provides a glue.  There appears to be nothing 
basically wrong.  If I make a very select choice, things seem to work, 
but I seem to have to use '--skip-broken' to make any progress and 
eventually, X becomes useless.

  You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem
