Finally, a working nouveau driver

I had exactly the same problem with my GeForce 8400 GS, and I solved it 
the same way -- the mouse stopped disappearing when I switched to the 
nvidia driver.

Unfortunately, although I'm not certain, I believe the nvidia driver 
doesn't support xrandr, so it's not all positive.
