I have experienced similar symptoms when I used optical media that my DVD
drive did not recognize.  The same disc worked on another system
(different drive), and worked in an external, USB DVD drive connected to
the system that would not boot from this disc in its installed drive.

This may not be the problem you have, but it fits your problem
description.
