Long pause on searching for storage solved

The most interesting thing about that whole thread is the implicit
assumption that long pauses are inevitable. No one seems to ask
the question: Why the heck does it take minutes to decide the
floppy isn't there? (Especially when Windows seems to be able to
deduce the same thing in a few seconds on the same misconfigured
hardware).
