Had this problem with my MacBookPro7,1 - likely the Air has very similar
(if not the same) sound hadware. To get my machine to make sound, I had
to:

1) Force snd_hda_intel to detect the machine as a macbookpro:
[wwoods at samus ~]$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf
  options snd_hda_intel model=mbp55
2) Turn up the mixer volumes (and save them):
  alsamixer -c0
  sudo alsactl store 0

I have a bug open about this:

This doesn't work in nouveau either - I suspect they've changed
something about how the mini-DP works in recent models..

Weird - works fine on my MacBook Pro. Two-finger click for right-click,
three-finger for middle. Two-finger scrolling works horiz/vert (I might
have had to go into the Mouse prefs to turn that on).

Is the bcm5974 module loaded? It's possible they changed the USB product
ID and yours isn't getting claimed by the right driver..
