Another workaround for this issue is to configure GDM to do automatic login (assuming that you always log in as the same user). I have had automatic login configured for the longest time, and I didn't even notice the problem.

Put this in the [daemon] section of /etc/gdm/custom.conf to enable automatic login:

AutomaticLoginEnable=true
AutomaticLogin=username
