preupgrade F15 fails

Well on reboot, startx generates the checkerboard screen, and locks up 
the console. I can boot to initlevel 3, but after startx I can only 
access the machine by ssh.

My video hardware - geforce 6600 on an amd 890 chipset - isn't exotic. 
nouveau worked on fc13 and fc14.
