For threading purposes, I am replying to my own message. Thanks to Rahul's suggestion. I re-tried the autologin and it has worked. I guess the problem could have been the addition of the following line:
TimedLoginDelay=0
to the file /etc/gdm/custom.conf
I commented it out with `#` and that did the trick :)
