It seems to work here, at least it causes the value to be changed:

[adamw at adam SRPMS]$ gsettings get
org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.updates frequency-get-updates
86400
[adamw at adam SRPMS]$ gsettings get
org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.updates frequency-get-updates
3600
[adamw at adam SRPMS]$ gsettings get
org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.updates frequency-get-updates
86400

that's while I flipped it between 'hourly' and 'daily' in 'Software
Updates'.
