Perhaps not for a true upgrade.  However, my typical upgrade procedure
is to install the new release in a separate fresh partition, keeping the
old /home.  This is useful for testing (if the new release isn't
ready for prime time), and as a fall-back in case something goes wrong.
I believe many people do something similar.
