reboot after updates didn't work

Well, since the screen went totally blank, and there was nothing
in the logs, I can't actually say for sure :-).

The good thing was that I didn't notice fsck forcing any checks
of partitions after I power cycled, so perhaps the important
parts got processed before it hung for whatever reason.
