Well, I'm actually running KDE, though I initially opened Gnome and had 
the same issues.

I'm running yum update at this moment, and it did pull in a new kernel. 
It's taking forever (44 installed so far out of 252 updates), but, I'll 
report back on the results. I also will re-run Guest Additions install 
using Andre's tip, and I'll report those results as well. I will reboot 
after the yum update finishes, just to isolate one 'fix' from the other.
